SLEEVENOTES
25 minute long soundtrack to "Ghost Worlds (Animal Rites)" an expanded cinema performance by Avant Kinema (Sarahjane Swan & Roger Simian) at Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, May 2018.

The evolution of the music's recording began with an improvisation on Handpan by Neil Coles (aka Undertoad). Avant Kinema then added their own musical elements: Sarahjane Swan's voice & Roger Simian's instrumentation.

UNDERTOAD
Undertoad - aka Neil Coles, a folk musician from Newcastle - developed a love for psychedelic music when he befriended Ozric Tentacles in London in the 1980s. He shared a flat with the band in Wimbledon and cheerfully followed them on tour, selling Ozrics t-shirts and cassettes along the way, as well as contributing bodhrán and other instrumentation to some of the band’s recordings.

Around 2010, Coles adopted the name Undertoad and began creating Psytrance sets alongside PsyWave (Mark Zf of long-standing Geordie dissonant industrialists, Zoviet France).

Two years ago Undertoad discovered the instrument of his dreams: the Handpan!

AVANT KINEMA / THE BIRD AND THE MONKEY
Scottish Borders based creative duo Sarahjane Swan and Roger Simian began collaborating in music, film, art & writing in 2009. Their work in moving image, under the name AvantKinema, resulted in the pair being shortlisted for Edinburgh International Film Festival's Short Film Challenge 2016 and nominated for the Margaret Tait Award 2018. Films have screened across the UK, Europe and North America, with several included in US experimental cable access show, Here Comes Everybody. A local politician even recently proposed a motion to the Scottish Parliament applauding their achievements.

Swan and Simian have also created more than three albums worth of left-field music and over 20 music videos as The Bird And The Monkey, with strong support coming from BBC 6 Music, The Glasgow Herald, BBC2 (who used a track in drama series, The Cut), Tom Robinson's Fresh On The Net, MP3 blogger Paul Kerr (The Devil Has The Best Tuna) who originally suggested they adopt the name The Bird And The Monkey, legendary local DJs Ian Hales (Acacia Radio) and Donald Strachan (TD1 / Views From The Edge) and mohawked Scots DJ, Jim Gellatly (Amazing Radio).
