A Sonnet for Bella McLay on Christmas Day

Across the crystal loch on silver blades
a pretty girl glides, collides without care.
A ghost of minted breath, misting the air,
her laughter lights a flame as daylight fades.
The memory rises, thaws through the ice.
In Nineteen-Forty Six on Christmas Day,
he touched her hand and leaned in close to say,
“I mean to kiss your lips, so name your price”.
Bella McLay in blue winter bonnet,
with the greenest of eyes. Burgundy-red:
her lips. Dancing over the ice, she said,
“Think you're so smart? Then write me a sonnet!”.
Well, here beneath a wreath on Christmas Day,
an old man leaves these words for Belle McLay.
